C60, Buckminsterfullerene - biological implications

*** NOTE - this page is work in progress and I will be adding more information as it comes in ***

In 2012 a very interesting paper ("The prolongation of the lifespan of rats by repeated oral administration of 60-fullerence", T. Baati et al., Biomaterials 33 (2012) 4936-4946) was published on the possible life extending properties of C60. Such studies have lead to a lot of speculation about the health implications of the fullerenes. The chemist Derek Lowe has written an interesting blog about the paper (see links below) along with some errors that were noticed in the article. A Google search will bring up many claims for the 'health benefits' for C60 including stem cell production and longevity. I can't comment on these results as I simply do not know enough about this particular area, but I do believe much more science needs to be done (and then repeated by other groups) before we can tell the full health / biological implications of C60 or any other fullerene.

As the topic will be of interest to many I have added links on this page for those that want to find out more.
